Cavities and Fillings

Cavities and Fillings

Treating cavities, or tooth decay, has been the bread and butter of the dental profession for hundreds if not thousands of years. Tooth decay occurs from bacteria in the mouth breaking down carbohydrates (from the sugars and starches we eat) and producing acids which then damage our teeth. This process is affected by many different things, including an individual’s diet, oral hygiene (brushing and flossing), saliva, and many other environmental and lifestyle factors.

At Proactive Dental, many patients come in for check-ups completely unaware that they have tooth decay. The outer layer of our teeth, the enamel, does not contain any nerves and so cannot feel pain when decay starts to break it down. Sensitivity or discomfort can start when the decay process spreads deeper into the dentine, or inner layer of the tooth. Consequently, since they have not been experiencing any pain, patients may be surprised when the dentist discovers areas of active decay.

As decay can spread very quickly if left unmanaged, it is recommended for you to come in for a check-up every 6 months. This also allows us to address any problems earlier before they begin causing discomfort. Management of a smaller cavity can also reduce the need for more complex or invasive treatment down the track, such as an extraction, root canal therapy, or crowns.

At Proactive Dental, we provide high quality care with the latest technology and dental materials available. Gone are the old silver amalgam fillings, the new filling materials we use are metal-free, conservative, and white or natural coloured. This allows us to provide fillings that blend in seamlessly with your existing smile, and last for years to come.
